The bamboo corridors at Naman Retreat are so good they've been published in architecture journals, and you eat breakfast 15 metres from them while listening to the ocean.

I came to Naman Retreat because a photographer friend had posted pictures of the bamboo architecture and I'd assumed they were edited. They're not. Vo Trong Nghia's design — the long curved bamboo corridors, the water features running alongside the pathways, the way natural light moves through the structure at different times of day — is genuinely extraordinary in a way that photographs can only approximate.

But here's what matters more than the architecture for most guests: the atmosphere. Naman Retreat is calm in the way that only smaller, adult-skewing properties can be. There's no kids' club noise at the pool, no tour-group check-in queues in the lobby. By 9am I had a sun lounger, a Vietnamese iced coffee, and the sound of the ocean twenty metres away.

The restaurant — Haven — is probably the best hotel restaurant on the Non Nuoc stretch. The spa is serious rather than decorative. If you're choosing between Naman and the larger resort properties nearby, you're choosing between a design-conscious boutique experience and full-scale resort infrastructure. Both are legitimate choices.

Location & Getting There

Non Nuoc Beach, about 15km south of centre — slightly further south than the Hyatt/Marriott cluster, which makes it a touch more isolated but also noticeably quieter. The beach in front of Naman is a non-motorized zone, so the water is calmer and cleaner than sections further north. Hoi An is 30 minutes south. Airport takes 20–25 minutes.

The Rooms

Standard rooms are around 45–50sqm, which is slightly smaller than you'd expect at the price point — but the design quality makes them feel more generous than the number suggests. Natural materials throughout: bamboo screens, stone bathroom surfaces, teak furniture. The outdoor terrace is part of the living space, not an afterthought. Pool villas with private pools are where the property is most compelling — and yes, the budget jump is significant, but a private pool villa on a Non Nuoc beach at Naman's design standard is a benchmark experience.

Rates from around $200/night for standard rooms, $600–900+ for pool villas in peak periods.

Pool, Beach & Facilities

Two pools: a long lap pool and a main resort pool surrounded by the bamboo and water-feature landscaping that is Naman's signature. They're not the largest pools in Da Nang but they're among the most photographed. The beach is direct-access and quiet. Beach yoga programmes run most mornings and they're the kind of thing that sounds cheesy in a brochure but actually works in context.

Food & Drink

Haven Restaurant is doing genuinely creative work with Vietnamese ingredients. The grilled seafood and the rice-based dishes are the standouts. Breakfast is included in most rates and is excellent — the Vietnamese breakfast station is better than anything I've had at the larger resort properties. The fruit spread every morning looked like it was styled for a magazine.

The beach bar does solid afternoon cocktails. The bartenders have a recipe for a lychee-basil thing I've tried to replicate at home unsuccessfully. Go at 5pm for the light.

The most distinctive resort in Da Nang for design-conscious travellers. The architecture, spa, and restaurant combine into an experience that's hard to replicate. A pool villa here is a benchmark for Vietnam resort travel.

The Good Stuff

  • Architectural design is genuinely world-class — Vo Trong Nghia's bamboo structures are extraordinary
  • Haven Restaurant is among the top three hotel restaurants in Da Nang
  • Spa quality exceeds most comparable properties
  • Pool villas with private pools are a true luxury benchmark
  • Calm, adult atmosphere without feeling stuffy or uptight

Worth Knowing

  • Slightly more isolated than the Hyatt/Marriott Non Nuoc cluster
  • Standard room sizes are smaller than competitors at similar rates
  • No kids' club — wrong choice for families with young children
