10 Da Nang Tourist Mistakes

After 4 years in Da Nang, these are the most consistent mistakes I see first-time visitors make. Most are avoidable with 5 minutes of research.

1
Booking a city-centre hotel and expecting easy beach access
The mistake
Booking in the Han River / city centre area because "Da Nang beach city" implies the beach is central. It is not. My Khe beach is across the river, 10-15 minutes by taxi.
The fix
If the beach is why you are going, stay on the beach. My Khe or Non Nuoc. The city centre is convenient for food and nightlife, not for beach mornings.

The city centre hotels are fine for people who want urban Vietnam with occasional beach trips. If you are paying beach resort prices expecting to walk out your door to the sand, you need to check the map before booking. See our area guide for the full breakdown.

One Thing Tourists Miss
Da Nang is really two cities: the urban Han River area and the beach strip. They are connected by bridges, but they are not the same place. Most people who feel disappointed with Da Nang booked the wrong one.
2
Not checking beach safety flags before swimming
The mistake
Walking straight into the water without checking the flag system. Red flags mean swimming is dangerous - rips and wave conditions can change fast.
The fix
Green flag = safe to swim. Yellow flag = caution, strong swimmers only. Red flag = do not swim. The lifeguards will pull you out and be vocal about it.

Da Nang takes beach safety seriously and has a well-staffed lifeguard presence during season. Red flag days are common in October-November and during seasonal swell events. The flags are there for a reason - people drown on red flag days when they ignore them.

3
Underestimating how spread out Da Nang is
The mistake
Planning itineraries as if Da Nang is a compact city where attractions are walkable. The airport to Non Nuoc beach is 20km. Ba Na Hills is 40km from the city centre.
The fix
Budget 30-40 minutes transit time between any two points in the city. Use Grab - it is cheap ($5-15 for most in-city rides) and reliable. Every half-day plan needs transit built in.

4
Skipping Hoi An because "it's not Da Nang"
The mistake
Treating Da Nang as an isolated beach destination and missing the fact that one of Vietnam's most beautiful towns is 45 minutes south. Many visitors skip it due to poor trip planning.
The fix
Dedicate at least one full day to Hoi An. Leave early (8am), stay for dinner - the lantern-lit evening is what most day trips miss. A Grab costs $12-16 each way.

Hoi An's UNESCO-listed Ancient Town is 45 minutes south of Da Nang. Not going to Hoi An from Da Nang is the equivalent of going to Florence and not visiting the Uffizi because it is "technically a different building." It is the obvious day trip and most people who do it say it was the best day of their trip.

5
Booking Non Nuoc beach hotels in late October
The mistake
Booking Non Nuoc resort hotels without knowing that many close or severely reduce services in October as typhoon season peaks. You can arrive to find the resort half-empty and beach access restricted.
The fix
Check directly with any Non Nuoc hotel about October-November operations. Book with free cancellation. Consider shifting dates to March-June for peak-season quality.

October is the worst month in Da Nang. If you must travel in this period, use the weather guide and ensure all bookings are fully refundable.

6
Eating every meal at resort restaurants
The mistake
Defaulting to resort dining for every meal because it is convenient. Resort restaurant markup is 3-5x street price, and most resort food is no better than what is available two minutes' walk away.
The fix
Walk to An Thuong Street (parallel to My Khe beach). Dozens of restaurants serving excellent Vietnamese and international food at 20-30% of resort prices. Five minutes on foot from most beach hotels.

A resort breakfast for two at $50. A Vietnamese breakfast for two at a local cafe on An Thuong: $6. The quality gap does not justify the price gap. Use the resort for coffee and the sunset cocktail. Eat the real food outside.

Local Reality Check
An Thuong Street is five minutes on foot from most My Khe beach hotels. It has thirty or forty restaurant options, rooftop bars, and a dozen good cafes. Guests who discover it always wonder why they ate at the resort for the first three nights.
7
Not pre-arranging airport transfer for late arrivals
The mistake
Arriving at Da Nang airport at midnight with no transport plan and being approached by unmetered taxi touts charging 2-3x standard rates.
The fix
Download Grab before landing. Grab works well at Da Nang airport and the price is fixed before you confirm. Alternatively, pre-book a hotel transfer - most hotels offer this for $15-25.

Da Nang airport is small and you will be outside the terminal within 20 minutes of landing. Grab pick-up from the designated area is simple. The unofficial taxi touts at international arrivals are persistent - just ignore them and open Grab. See Da Nang airport guide for the full transfer options.

8
Not checking DIFF dates before booking
The mistake
Booking a quiet resort holiday during Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF) dates without realising hotel prices spike, roads close, and the city gets loud.
The fix
Check the DIFF schedule before confirming dates. DIFF runs selected weekends April-June. If your dates overlap, either book deliberately for the spectacle or shift by a week. See the fireworks festival guide.
"The people who love Da Nang most are the ones who stepped off the resort grounds. The city rewards that decision every single time."

9
Assuming all beaches are safe to swim in winter
The mistake
Visiting Da Nang November-February expecting the same calm water conditions as photos show. The South China Sea gets rough - long-period swells, strong rips, frequent red flag days.
The fix
If swimming is essential to your trip, visit March-August. If you travel in winter, adjust expectations - Da Nang is still a pleasant city even without beach swimming. Some years December has good swimming windows; many do not.
10
Paying hotel rack rates instead of booking ahead
The mistake
Booking last-minute or paying walk-in rates at 4-star beach hotels during peak season (March-June). Rack rates can be 40-60% above early-booking rates for the same room.
The fix
Book 6-10 weeks ahead for March-June stays. Use Booking.com for price comparison and free cancellation. Lock in the rate early and cancel if plans change. See best hotels guide for top picks at each budget level.

Common Questions

Da Nang Tourist Mistakes: FAQ

What is the biggest mistake tourists make in Da Nang?+

Booking a city-centre hotel expecting easy beach access. The Han River area and My Khe beach are separated by a bridge and a 10-15 minute taxi ride. Guests who book in the city expecting to walk to the beach are consistently disappointed. If the beach is the point of your trip, stay on the beach - My Khe or Non Nuoc. See the where to stay guide for the area breakdown.

Is it safe to swim at Da Nang beach?+

Yes, during the dry season (roughly February to August). Red flag days do occur and the lifeguards enforce them - do not swim when the red flag is flying. From November to February the surf increases significantly and swimming is dangerous on many days. October and November are the highest-risk months for rough conditions and typhoon-related swells.

Should I avoid Da Nang in October?+

Yes if beach access is important to you. October-November is Da Nang's peak typhoon and storm season. Hotels along the Non Nuoc stretch close early in October as storms approach, and beach conditions are frequently unsafe. If you must travel in October, book with full free cancellation and have backup plans. The city itself stays open, but the beach resort experience is unreliable.

What is the DIFF fireworks festival and should I avoid it?+

DIFF is the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival, held on selected weekends from late April through June each year. Competition nights involve road closures near Han River, city-wide hotel price spikes, and large crowds. The fireworks themselves are spectacular - if you want to see them, plan around it deliberately. If you are visiting for a quiet resort holiday, avoid DIFF dates entirely.

What is the best way to get from Da Nang airport to beach hotels?+

Grab (the Southeast Asian ride-hailing app) is the most reliable and price-transparent option. A Grab from Da Nang airport to My Khe beach costs $8-12 and takes 15-20 minutes. To Non Nuoc, budget $12-18 and 25-30 minutes. Pre-arrange if arriving late at night. See the airport transfer guide for all options.

Is food expensive at Da Nang beach resort restaurants?+

Yes, significantly. Most resort breakfast buffets cost $20-30 per person. A beach resort dinner for two easily reaches $80-120. The An Thuong restaurant strip, which runs parallel to My Khe beach, has dozens of excellent restaurants charging $8-20 for a main course. Walk 5 minutes from most beachfront hotels and your food costs halve immediately.
