Worst Time to Visit Da Nang

The worst months to visit Da Nang are October and November. These are not months where it rains a bit in the afternoon — this is Central Vietnam's typhoon corridor at full strength. Multi-day downpours, rough seas, flooding in low-lying areas near the Han River, beach closed, no swimming. If your trip is beach-centred and you have date flexibility, avoid these months.

Month-by-Month: The Bad Weather Months

What Actually Happens During Da Nang Rainy Season

Having lived here since 2022 and been through three rainy seasons: October is not "a bit wet." When a front sits over Central Vietnam, it rains without stopping for 3–5 days at a time. Not tropical-downpour-then-sunshine rain. Continuous grey rain, the road outside the hotel floods to 30cm in some areas, and the beach is off-limits with red flags up the whole strip.

The Han River District and Ngu Hanh Son District have lower-lying areas that flood. Most hotels are above the flood line, but getting around the city during heavy rain by foot is unpleasant. Grab still works but takes longer.

September is a risk, not a disaster. You might get a good week. You might arrive to a tropical storm. The probability is meaningfully higher than April. If you're travelling with children or have mobility concerns, September is not worth the gamble.

Typhoons

Central Vietnam sits in the typhoon corridor. Da Nang's typhoon season is roughly August to November, peaking in October. A typhoon near-miss means 48 hours of strong wind and heavy rain even if the eye passes 100km away. Hotels remain open. Flights sometimes divert or cancel. Beach is off-limits for the duration. There is no prediction reliable enough to book around a specific storm — the risk is structural to the season.

If You Have to Visit in Bad-Weather Months

Sometimes dates are fixed. Here's how to make it work:

• Base yourself in Hoi An instead of Da Nang. Hoi An (25 min south) is equally affected by rain but better built for non-beach activities: Ancient Town, tailors, cooking classes, river boat trips. It is less depressing when it's raining.
• Book a city hotel, not a beach resort. Paying resort prices for a hotel you can't use the pool or beach at is not value. The Novotel Premier Han River or similar city-centre hotel is the right call — you get Level 36 for sunsets and Han Market for mornings regardless of weather.
• Indoor activities that work: Ba Na Hills (30 min west, above cloud level sometimes — cool and different), cooking classes, My Son Sanctuary (covered temples, 1.5h south), marble carving shops at Marble Mountains (indoor), spas.
